I find this very appealing, and I think it's due to the muted colors. You're probably right about the fill flash not being blatant enough, but then again fill flash really shouldn't be all that apparent, should it?

I MISS pinecones!! There. I said it. Where I moved from we had pinecones as big as a man's size 13 foot. They were great for decorations. Thanks for helping me scratch that pinecone itch.

An excellent shot of a piglet! He's a rather cute little guy, too. But seriously, very nice control of light and exposure - tough to get detail in black animals and you did that very well here.
