I think the Lightroom preset is what made it appear "washed out" to some, though that is indeed the look of the preset, and it is very monitor-dependent. On my monitor, it looks fine. Your original shows it is definitely not overexposed! I can't help you much with ideas for processing (I'm not that good at it) and with on camera flash, your best option is to kinda diffuse it (a tissue for instance) and to use a white board or large piece of paper as a reflector, too. It really can be surprising how much difference that makes! As it is, I think you lit her face well, and the shot is composed well, and definitely meets the challenge in a unique and interesting way!

Nice photo, Good composition.... I've never heard of the band so it's hard for me to understand the relevance of the cooling towers to the band name..... 8 for the photo alone. I like it
