hiya' Kat~
set the lens to AF and then in the cam center (single) spot the focal point, set the "bleep" too so you KNOW you've got it, then click right away before the darned cat moves again! :) now try it again hehehe

That cat reminds me of "Annoying Cat No. 1" here. If you're close it can be tricky to get the focus right where you want it. Next time you may want to try manual focus.

What Art says...if you want the nose to the eyes sharp, you'll go to a smaller aperture. Of course you'll lose a little light in the process, so you'll have to find the magical balance if shutter speeds start getting to slow. I'm using that same lens and am really struggling to get just the right amount of DoF.

If your camera is set to multi-point focus you can try to single it out to one point. Whatever point that is put it on the same plane as the cat's eyes (just point it at one of the eyes) and you should get the focus you and everyone desires.
