I don't think I could come up with a lighting situation that's much more challenging than this.

The candy case is completely lit from florescent lights in the back, and there's a sheet of glass reflecting lights from slot machines on the front. A single exposure long enough to properly expose the broad side of the candies will completely blow out the short side because there's too much contrast between what's lit and what's in shadows. Even thought the human eye can deal with this, digital cameras can't without lots of work on your part. You picked a happy medium on exposure, ended up with candies completely hidden in shadows, and other candies with all detail blown out in highlights. Overall the whole thing was underexposed, so you fixed it up the best you could in photoshop (and that's where you got all the color noise).

I think with a tripod to make several long exposures and a polarizing filter you could put together a HDR image that could get around the technical problems without having to bring in more lights -- not that anyone besides you would appreciate it. This composition just doesn't have much of an impact.

The lighting seems really harsh here. Too harsh for my tastes.

Quiche - thanks for providing the set-up details for this. I am always interested in discovering how a photographer went about achieving a shot that has intrigued me, and this one certainly did! I am glad that it was taken in the field, rather than a studio - it was only after I had viewed a few times that I began to wonder, hence the addition to my comment during voting.

Oh, it's that budgie again, isn't it? I think I liked the Story shot better in composition and the way the sun illuminated the claws. I think this one might be better cropped tighter; the tail isn't adding much IMO.
