I Wish I Had A Friendby OneSweetSinComment by e301: Right, i've deliberately waited until later than usual to write my critiques, to see if it changes anything, and of course it doesn't.
I like the mood of this one Anna - even though the focus seems to have 'missed', and the rocks behind the child seem more in focus than he is. Plenty og good and useful comments too, which is good to see.
I'd like to see what he's doing with the stick, even if it's just waving around in mid-air, especially as the composition really pulls the focus that way - the movement of the eye from falls, to child, to stick is very natural and it's a touch a shame that the end of the stick isn't there. I think focussing fully on the child, and leaving the bacground to blur out with depth of field would add impact, but perhaps would lose some of the tones of the rocks. The selecive colour thing works, as some have said, to bring the eye to the subject, and works well for that: and it's a trick I mostly don't like at all.
One of your better shots, I think Anna.

Fading Memory of Summerby OneSweetSinComment by kiwiness: Hey Anna, welcome to my once a month critique for the critique club. For some reason I always end up with your photos to critique :-)
The flower you chose for your subject is very interesting. We are so used to seeing perfectly fresh looking flower macros here, it isn't often you get to see a flower which is heading away from it's glamour phase. But why not? Where does it say in any rules that we always need flowers in full bloom?
The colors and tones are very pleasant to look at, the shallow DOF enhances the structure of your flower. The focus is good although it comes over a little on the soft side, probably resulting from a slight camera shake is my guess. Did you shoot this free hand or did you use a tripod?
The cropped out part of the flower on the left side of the image is something I would have changed however, it is quite noticeable and takes away from the quality of the photo.
Any help?

Naturally Beautifulby OneSweetSinComment by Ornis: Nice reflection. In fact, colors are nicer reflelected in the water in reality (lack of sharpness mainly). You could have played with just the trees and their reflections, shooting closer. I would crop the unesthetic building, not adding anything to the scene. |
