| 02/21/2003 01:17:52 AM | Peakin' Round the Cornerby OneSweetSinComment by briphoto: The composition and lighting in this photo are not too bad. I liked especially the right side of the photo, where the columns draw your eye in. But, the photo seems to go nowhere, except maybe to draw your eyes straight to the person who is supposed to be "hidden". The focus is the worst part of this shot, the foreground is in focus, but the background is not, and it doesn't enhance the picture at all. The challenge is met, because the person is not in plain view. If it were not for the yellow on the person they would almost blend in perfectly.
Don't be too discouraged, this was a hard challenge, as is evidenced by the lower number of submissions. I didn't submit to this one myself. |

COMPOSITION
The strong vertical motion really pulls the viewer into this one. The foremost pillars frame the shot nicely, and it works being symmetrical. (Sometimes shots that seem to be intended to be symmetrical, are just a touch off adn it is difficult to tell if it was intentional or not.)
TECHNIQUE
You have done well to have the front pillars focused, and having focus throughout the picture, though the grass does seem a little fuzzy. Maybe you could have used a slightly larger aperture number, slowed down the shutter a touch, and gotten more focus and detail shown. Also, itis a little "drab" in that the pillars are all the same color (I know, that's out of your control) and the grass as well. I would suggest boosting the contrast and converting it to black and white. If you really wanted color, maybe saturating the grass (not a lot you can do with Carolina grass in February!)
OVERALL EFFECT
Great subject for the challenge. I think the picture would have had a little more oomph if the colors were a little more bold, or if there were some more contrast. Too bad there wasn't a bright red sign at the end or something to really be a focus spot. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

The image looks washed out, but the building in the lower left implies that the levels are already maxxed out. Focus is good. |

Overall, the photo has some potential, but also some flaws that give it a "snapshot" kind of feel. I like how the girls are lined up in a row that flows diagonally through the photo. I like that most of them are wearing read which emphasizes the diagonal. Overall, the photo isn't quite as sharp as it needs to be and seems al ittle washed out. The first girl has a table behind her head that's distracting. A slightly different angle could've taken care of that. |
