mind youby mitalapoComment by wbanning: I imagine you'll take a beating score-wise on this. But it's a bold entry in my book. Thanks for making me smile and see yellow in an unorthodox manner. I hereby grant you the monochrome version of the POLM - Pointless Order of the Liquid Mind. Take it FWIW.

dotsby mitalapoComment by posthumous: Originally posted by CNovack: Great B&W tones and wonderful details of the people that are hanging out at this outdoor street cafe. The woman's polka dot shirt really does stand out and commands attention to focus on her and her expression. Given the title (both you and I were drawn to the dynamic pattern of her shirt) and where the eye is drawn to it seems the the man on the right contributes very little to the scene. I think that the photo might be a stronger composition if it was framed to just have the woman with the polka dot shirt in it along with some of the city street behind her. Cropping out the man entirely would keep the focus centered squarely on the woman. Having the right side of the frame end at the far edge of that building would keep the city streets and background people in the frame giving your audience a sense of place the woman occupies without distracting attention away from her. It also subtly brings the lines (stripes) of the building the to stage; pairing them up with the dots of her shirt (a study of shapes in the city landscape). I think a closer crop would also have the audience establish a stronger connection to the action going on in the photo. The woman's over the shoulder expression of catching us looking draws us into the scene making it feel like we are actually there. |
very thoughtful comment. the man on the right could be better, I admit, but he does provide a foil nonetheless... and above him are the "dots" of bokeh that represent his dream of her. She can sense him dreaming her, so she turns around suddenly... |
