H h H....Hungry horseby sfmorrisComment by KaDi: Greetings from the Critique Club!
What a nice capture of a tender moment between a mare and her nursing filly! I like the light and the way it presents the shapes of the two horses. The quadropod stance of the filly is classic! What a beautiful line the curved neck of the mother makes!
The setting is traditional farm. The inclusion of the fence and barn in the background clearly convey that. Though I do tend to agree that the brightness of the white building pulls attention way from main subject. I keep looking at this wondering how it could be even more intimate for the viewer...somehow a different angle of view to eliminate more of the trees...or a wider aperature to blur the setting a bit more?
As far as the challenge goes, I don't know what's on page Hh of the Seuss A,B,C book...probably a horse. But it was the voters who needed convincing, not me.
Overall, it's a lovely portrayal of a horsey moment.
Keep shooting what you love! |

What a great idea for symmetry. These animals are absolutely gorgeous. There is very little I could suggest to improve on this shot. The focus and exposure is great and gives good details on the horses. The shallow dof helps to isolate them from the background, which could be distracting, but because it is blurred, I think it helps to add to the composition by giving it context.
It does seem just a hair dark/flat to me, but I'm thinking it may be my monitor. If not, maybe just a boost of contrast or shadows/highlights, something like that, to give it just a bit more pop.
Great shot, best to you in future challenges.

Yearling Arabian Coltby sfmorrisComment by timfythetoo: Greetings from the Critique CLub -
Man - so close to the 6 that you could almost taste it. I know it's tough being that close and not getting the bump at rollover.
That said you really have a nice picture here. Good detail, good lighting and good colors. The background bokeh is cool too. From a technical point of view I think you have a nice clean image here.
Things that may have improved your score could be a less tight crop. Give us a bit more of the body or maybe a bit more of the green bokeh on the right to leave it not as centered. I know he isn't truly centered but a little more space may have felt nice. Perosonally I dont much care for the border either. It's a bit too thick and dark for your image IMO.
Can't really suggest anything else. You have a really nice pic of this young horse here. It doesnt have the wow power of the higher scoring images, but it also doesnt have anything really wrong with it to pull in the lower votes either which is very clear with your vote curve. You do really nice work with photographing horses. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
