It is an interesting image - there is something throwing me way off as I look at it - something feels unnatural and I like it.

This has some really great tones. Love the crispness of the whole shot. Neat how the bike is facing in the opposite direction of the sign. Great find.

Man I wish I had scenes like that. Great capture.

Are you using Photoshop's Dodge and Burn Tool? If so, from what I read that it bruises the pixels and it isn't a great tool. There is another way in photoshop to do what you want to do and it doesn't hurt the original image. Supposedly that is what the pros do.
I will see if I can summarize the steps here:
1. Go to the layers palette and choose New Layer.
2. On the New Layer dialog change Mode to Overlay then check Fill with Overlay-neutral color(50%gray) then click OK. You will see a new layer that is filled with gray but is transparent.
3. Press B to switch to the Brush Tool and in the options bar click on the thumbnail to the right of the world "Brush" and choose a medium soft-edged brush and lowers the brush opacity to 30%.
4. Press the letter D then X to set your foreground color to white then brush the areas you want to lighten. (dodge)
5. Press the letter D to set your foreground color to black then brush the areas that you want to darken (burn).
6. When done right click on your image layer in the and chose flatten.

Hope this helps.
