Freedom costs a bird? ;-) Eagle-as-American-symbol notwithstanding, the title seems to just not quite fit. As to the photo itself, the technicals are very good, but I am not fond of the downward-looking pose. Perhaps the title and downward look are intended to convey sadness at our soldiers lost in battle? If so, the connection is just not quite getting there for me.

Actually, the eagle hasn't done a whole lot, other than prevent itself from becoming extinct. (Sorry, getting a bit slap-happy with comments.) Regal pose, rich color, excellent detail, strong composition. This is no doubt kicking butt.

This is my favourite of the Bald Eagle shots submitted because of the closeness to the bird and the detail. There's a certain intimacy about this shot that separates it from the others for me. I think it's all in the fantastic detail and sparkle of the bird's eye.
