The shadow is a little distracting, but it does add balance to the composition. I'd prefer to see more of the pencil. It looks like someone who's been caught in the side of a photo, with a rabbit-in the headlights expression, because they didn't bother to smile, because they thought they weren't in the shot. OK, maybe I'm overanalysing here. :)

The penciling is difficult to read past the frowning face. Looks like your flash or whatever light source you were using could have benefited from using a soft box or other material to even out the light thrown onto the paper. The hotspot in the upper left is just washing too much detail out.
