I think moving to your left and turning a bit more to the right is what is missing. That would get the boy between you and the bush It would also give you more of what he is looking at. Because of the bright sunligh he appreas very washed out. On a lighter note, I saw this and thought the next statement is "I need to goto the bathroom."

well exposed image - but the boy facing away looking at the fountain isn't really that interesting - seeing a side view of him looking at the fountain woudl be much more interesting

Actually think a bit slower shutter might have given this just the right amount of pleasing motion blur. Looks a little static to me and that pulls back the sense of energy. Might bump the contrast a bit as well.
