For me, this image just lacks connection. It has a nice background. His left shoulder area looks a bit soft. I think maybe your position is a bit too close and low. It's nicely exposed. There's just nothing to pull me in...I don't know him, there's nothing especially striking about him (except maybe the shirt ;) ) and it lacks anything that makes me want to consider it longer which is something you really need when you're competing against 500 entries. Sweet bokeh, though.

Wish there was something else in the shot to give the feel that the guy is a surfer... ocean waves, surf board etc. Without the title, it's just a guy standing.
