Venus Templeby Rino63Comment by Leo: For some reason the detail of the bricks look "off". Kind of looks overly sharpened??? The temple itself is interesting but the processing doesn't look right on my screen... |

First Impression
The VERY first thing that came to mind when this image came up for me during voting was "I've seen this before". Don't know if that impacted anyone else or not, but it's worth noting that sometimes using the same material in back-to-back challenges can possibly work against you.
I think the subject material does work well for a Free Study, and your title fits it quite nicely as well.
Technicals
Compositionally, it's "ok" for me. The angle works for added drama. I would have liked to see the feather/quill positioned somewhat differently. The tip is running at the same angle as the bg and makes the viewer run right out of the bottom corner of the photo. Maybe if the feather was going more across the book allowing the tip to slow down the flow out of the image and at the same time giving the texture of the feather part more emphasis? Just thinking out loud here. :-)
The lighting and tone of this photo is right on the mark IMO. It feels much richer than the one you put up for Still Life. Focus and DOF are appropriate and work well. Minor nit is the few pieces of debris near the book on the bg material...
Overall it's a nice piece of studio work.
Take care.

Emergency toolby Rino63Comment by PenelopeK: Took me a while to realize this was a walnut! The title refers to the wrench, however, it's the walnut that really dominates the image. Maybe use of side lighting rather than overhead lighting would have shifted attention onto both, provided there was sufficient DOF. |

Antiqueby Rino63Comment by rodgers_le: The title is very accurate. As interesting as the book is, the addition of the feather and skull was a good choice. However, IMHO, the quill is a bit misplaced. It is a bit visually awkward over half the skull. |
