without restraintby bspurgeonComment by PenelopeK: Originally posted by markwiley: She is immune to the shadows. I can't quite figure out why I don't seem to see any of the fence's shadows across her leg/dress. Wonderful image. |
Lovely image, Ben. I love the sense of determination /fearlessness that I feel in her stride. Great energy.
Mark, if you look at her shadow, you can figure out that the front part of her foot probably has a shadow falling on it somewhere that we cannot see, the front of her leg, the part we can see, is in the space between two shadows, and there may be a feint shadow on her dress starting just behind her knee and another toward the back. I think the shadows are actually falling away from us in the picture, and thus not at 90 degrees to her, which is why the leg appears to be slanted forward in the image but appears "upright" relative to the shadows. Perhaps you don't see the shadows that are there in part because they are not striking her in the direction you were "expecting" them to be. Just a though! As you can tell, your question "hooked" my analytical side, and I am fascinated by how visual perceptions are affected by our expectations (eg. Escher) |
