Here's Ralf's tip: experiment, with care to not scratch your optics, by placing various other optics in front of your camera lens. Use the display to compose - it may surprise you. (Speaking with regard to a point and shoot with display screen)

My telescope has produced amazing results, as have binoculars. (Try both directions for telephoto and macro.)

I'm not sure about the focusing mechanism on your 410, but my D100 is similar to a fixed focus point and shoot - meaning it has an infinite DOF for most images - but in macro mode, it will decrease the DOF significantly. Makes it easy to shoot images through other optical instruments.

To date, all of the images in my portfolio were taken with my D100.
