This has too much jpeg artifacting (from overcompression) to make an accurate call as to the picture quality (look especially at the base of the vase and the cloth it sits on, as well as the background). Try saving at a higher quality setting next time.

It looks like the picture quality suffered when it was uploaded - it's very pixelated, even in the corners. This could easily have been cropped to a portrait orientation, and that might have saved a bit on the file size. If I can't Save for Web at 80% minimum, I won't upload it.

Oh, sorry a simple PS. Let´s try to improve it?
1 - Put your camera at a sturdy surface (a tripod is recomended).
2 - Don´t use flash, cancel it at camera sttings or simply cover it with black tape.
3 - Put one or more light sources at many diferent angles and shot.
4 - Or let the subject close to a natural light falling from a window partially opened (to control light intensity).

A nice enough subject, I suppose, but the photography is lacking, I'm afraid. There's not a whole lot artistic about it, in that it's just a straight on shot against a bland background. Plus the pixelation is really, really nasty with blotches all over the place. The shot is only about 11K when you can use 150K to submit to DPC... you might want to see the tutorial on the site to learn more about how to preserve the quality a bit better. Sorry if I'm sounding a bit harsh here, but those are a few issues that could help you improve future shots. Good luck!

3 - Whilst this vase looks quite old, if you were able to capture and 'show' the detail in it, would make this much better in my opinion. A more 'dramatic' angle, variation in lighting (especially to bring out the colors and detail/texture), different base (including color choice) and background, would all have made this better in my opinion. There seem to be some jpeg/pixelation issues as well, could be due to resizing or unfamiliarity with post-processing and reducing file size, who knows.

Ok let's be critical here to help you improve on your images ;) First of all, the object doesn't really lend to an "appealing" image. It's just a vase. So I suggest using lighting to create drama and feeling for this image. Instead of using a white background (which IMHO is just not great looking), I would use a black background with a single spotlight and shoot closer to the image. There is a slight tilt in the vase as well. This is advanced editing, I think you could have used as much of it as possible to help improve this image. I hope that this critique is being taken as helpful. I don't mean to sound mean or pompous. I am just hoping that you would understand why your image is scoring lower than what you had initially expected. (4)

There is a lot of noise in this shot. Do a google search on Neat Image. You can download a free version that would help this out a lot.
