The Queen of Heartsby freakin_hilariousComment by ambaker: Critique Club Review:
Color Saturation and Hue: Are saturated and hues are natural for the most part. It may be an effect of the lighting or processing, but there is a patch on the forehead that came out a blueish green.
Brightness and contrast: The scene is a bit bright in a couple of areas, most notably the top of the hair on the left side of the image. (Doll's right) The scene is back lit, and could have benefited from fill flash or more reflection to brighten the face of the doll. Contrast is moderate, not overly done.
Focus and depth of field: Focus is sharp, depth of field is hard to judge because of the use of the Lensbaby. I would liked to have seen all of the doll's hair in sharp focus.
I'm not sure what is going on at base of the doll, in the front of the frame. The soft focus, combined with the bits of blue color there, have joined forces to make it look like ink stains. The parts that are on the pink are of the dolls clothing look like the doll has been soiled. Some adjusting of the collar of the doll would have helped also.
It's a shame that the heart shaped aperture didn't show up more strongly in the image. The parts that I can see were very interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work with this tool.

Color Saturation and Hue: N/A, image is monochrome.
Brightness and contrast: Image is well lit. Contrast is good, highlights and shadows both hold good detail.
Focus and depth of field: the plane of focus may be a bit off, or depth of field made deeper. For the current depth of field, the plane of focus is a bit too far back, as evidenced by the softness of the baby's fingers on her right hand.
At first I was unsure as to whether I liked Mom in soft focus. In a way, it seems to diminish her role. But at the same time, it helps say that this is not a snapshot. That being said, it would have helped to comb Mom's hair. That does say snapshot, and the heavy strand of hair, distracts attention away from the subject. If depth of field were shallower, it might soften it enough to overcome. But at f/1.8 I don't think you could get much softer, not matter what lens you used. Perhaps the other answer is to darken the background even more so it is less competitive.
I like the pose. A very peaceful moment for mother and child. The child obviously feels very secure as evidenced by the relaxed position of the hand, and calm look on the face. |

Generationsby freakin_hilariousComment by RKT: Honestly one of my favorites in the challenge...baby in real life. These are the images to be cherished.
" looks more of a snap than a well thought out image in my opinion"
I disagree with this being a "snap"...why must every photograph be well thought out and planned to some people? What ever happened to the decisive moment? What happened to real life?
Ok...I won't begin a rant under this lovely real life shot...thanks for sharing this. |
