Looking at this the first thing I can see is all the highlights are blown in the sky and the shadows are barely existent. I can imagine this histogram peaks to the right. The midtones look ok, but there is a lack of contrast throughout.

Looks like you used on camera flash for this, which is casting some ugly shadows and giving the image a flat look.

This would have probably placed much higher if you had been able to include the whole tree.
Another problem is that this is posted much smaller than the 800 pixel longest side, size that is allowed in the challenges, making it appear much smaller than the other photos in the challenge.
It's a beautiful tree though, and the blue sky is a big plus. A lower angle would have shown more of that awesome fall sky to give the tree more punch in the image.

Bumping this one up from a 5 to a 7 on the second pass. Not because of the actual photography, but because you captured what I felt is lacking from most of the entries in this challenge. The bit of a humorous twist his images always have. Everybody is applauding this girl's performance except for the bratty brother who is making faces in the corner and hiding his laughter.
