Piss Angelby treenodeComment by mycelium: one of the few I've seen so far w/o the artist's name in the title - that can actually get away without the reference by name. Subject-wise, I have to say I'm not a fan of shots that focus primarily on figurines... I feel like it's kind of like taking a macro of a dollar bill. In this case, it's like a macro of a dollar bill in a jar of urine. (Were you faithful to your title?)
The original photo derived a lot of its power from its sanguine color and careful use of texture and light - not to mention that it's a crucifix with the hanging body of Christ in a jar of piss. No angel can equal the impact of the Son of God for impact in this context.
I wonder what you learned while making this picture.
Aside from those two points, one of which is definitely personal bias and the other of which may be needlessly comparative, I think this is a good picture. There's enough detail to hold interest - and a well-placed highlight on the halo - with enough obscured to create a sense of depth and mystery. The diffuse lighting through the liquid creates an eerie glowing effect around the figurine. It will be interesting to see how this one scores. |

Piss Angelby treenodeComment by hotpasta: I found the original offensive...this is not much better...it is supposed to be a tribute to a photographer not an artist |

Piss Angelby treenodeComment by Bear_Music: I had no idea what this image was about until someone I was chatting with happened to mention Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ", so I looked it up. You just jumped from a 5 to an 8. It's an excellent tribute to the original, plus you got cojones even doing this in the first place. I'm sorry you didn't include the photog's name in your title, I think very few people are going to get this, though I may be wrong. |
