21st centuryby ZigomarComment by phatphoto: This photo reminds me of how truly blessed I am. Sadly, I have family members who live in areas that look almost like this. Good luck to you. |

21st centuryby ZigomarComment by behindthescenes: you might be getting low scores from some people, but the reality is that this is 'city life' for some people. although the composition doesnt do much for me i like the realism presented here... |

21st centuryby ZigomarComment by skewsme: Great shot and choice of perspective. A scene you can't brush past. Possibly crop a bit of sky(?) - not sure. Love those colors on the washline. I'd be interested in seeing other shots of this scene. Nice work. Thanks. |

21st centuryby ZigomarComment by dahkota: I gave you a 9 - striking image. Would have been a 10 for me if the top had been cropped just a little more. Good luck in the challenge! |

21st centuryby ZigomarComment by muypoetico: Like the inquisitive penetration of the camera here into the squalor but compositionally doesn't seem all that interesting |

21st centuryby ZigomarComment by ubique: Yes, that's a ghastly side of city life in many countries. This particular scene, when examined past the evidence of squalor and misery, has some interesting details. The woman is managing to provide clean clothes for her family, even here. She also appears to have two bathtubs (both outdoor), and a satellite TV antenna suspended above the yard. Plus she has her house number prominently displayed, although for whose benefit it is difficult to imagine ... she probably entertains few casual visitors. The flag on her roof is that of Serbia & Montenegro, so it may be that this disgraceful mess is a hopefully temporary artifact of that region's splendid history of ethnic harmony and tolerance.
It's a very sad vision of city life, and you did well to bring it to us. |
