internet safety lights at midnightby kenboComment by floyd: Greetings from the Critique Club
This photograph was submitted to the Indoor Macro Shot challenge. While your photograph certainly is both indoor and close-up or macro I think you've perhaps missed what I believe is the most important element of a macro shot. My favourite macro shots show me something I've never seen before. That might be extra detail in a subject or a different angle on a subject. This blend of familiar and new is what makes a great macro shot work for me.
I believe your concept for this shot is a good one - the bright coloured lights add a focal point to the image but alone they're not enough. Adding a gentle white light off to the side would have kept the midnight feel but also given the viewer some feeling for the shapes of what we're seeing. It might also have created some interesting gradients of light on any rounded surfaces.
It's hard to judge the technical aspects of this photograph. There's not much detail but focus appears to be good. The vast majority of the shot is completely un-exposed and that's, I think, what you were aiming for. Composition is a little straight-on and I'm wondering what the orange/red line in the top right is there for. Perhaps cropping that might have given the image more focus on the lights. feathery symmetryby kenboComment by kiwiness: Critique Club:
Hi Kenichi, and congratulations on a great shot here. Peacock feathers make for good symmetry and it seems you were the only one to pick up this idea.
This is technically a very good capture, the focus and detail are bang on. The composition is neat, the tilt to the left is better than if it had been perfectly straight in my opinion. However, I find the crop might be a little too tight and personally would have gone a little larger on it, but that is just me.
Maybe a tweak on the saturation levels could have brought that color out a little more as well. Basically a very good photo though and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

mat with 2 π(pi) toothpick aroundby kenboComment by dsidwell: I have to admit to being both intrigued and confused at this image. Of course it is a literal communication of pi is, but I find the basket and toothpicks really interesting in relation to the cold numbers. You've also used the non-scientific color of red as a background, so my mind is every which way. Hmmm. That could be a good thing! |
