I guess if it doesn't hit you in the face it just won't score well.

Interesting that such a poor scoring shot didn't get many comments saying why it stinks. (Hey folks, if you give it a low score you are supposted to leave a comment why you did it!)

It's also in focus. There just happens to be alot of moisture in the air.

I'm not sure what the subject is here? The foreground objects dominate, but lack interest. Best of luck.

To me it seems a bit too busy, and slightly soft. Maybe USM would fix that? I think sepia may make it less busy-looking too.

Neat clouds, but the shot as a whole seems to lack a point of interst to really focus in on, leaving your eyes to wander around.

I think the highlights got blown when I was apparently careless in enhancing the contrast. The original image was fine. The colorcast (incandescent lighting) should have been removed when I set the white balance based on the rim of the bowl, but I guess not!

There were many comments negative about the light bulb. Since the shape was "bulb" I decided to toss in a non-organic bulb and picked one that I felt worked well for the composition, being roughly the size of a garlic bulb. OK, it was a bit of humor that seemed to go flat.

I like the geometric form of a circle in a square, which is why I went for a square composition.

This picture does need some help. I gave it a 4 on voting and the biggest reason was the color cast and overexposure. If you look at the histogram in Photoshop you will see that there is a huge spike at the right edge. This represents blown pixels with no detail. With the color sampler too you will also see that the whites are reddish. I think this is most evident on the two large onions.

The square composition works as well as the overall idea. Sometimes I ask questions like "why is the bulb among the onions?" and if there isn't a good answer I feel it seems a bit forced. I do get the roundness of everything, but beyond that (thinking this picture was on its own and not in a challenge)?

I think it does show you are being creative with your shots. Sorry I'm being a little harsh on this one. I've liked some of your other stuff. The Zen Garden was nice and I was a big fan of your "too early" shot, giving that a 9. Keep working at it.

Challenge
- Relevant to the Challenge? Yes.
- Is subject unique (vs. unoriginal or rehashed)? Yes.

Compostion
- Good or Bad? How can it be fixed? Let's deal with the humorous aspect, the light bulb, first. I'm thinking bad choice. From your previous submissions, you seem to have a sense of humor, however I don't think that many others appreciate it. (I have a very dry sense of humor, so I can talk from experience in other venues. ;) If you want to go for the humorous I'd go for a standard light bulb. I like the diagonal lines of the grain of the table, but make it run corner to corner. Add a few more onions and turn it into a small pyramid with the larger ones to the back and bottom.
- Good focus? Yes

Lighting
- Good use of light? Yes. Nice soft diffused lighting. Nothing blown out, but still enough to create some nice shadows.

Aesthetics/Artistic Appeal:
- Colors and Contrast. Here's the first thing that struck me at voting. The color of the table, the onions and the inside of the bowl all combine to give the image a orange tone to it. Change the bowl to a contrasting blue bowl. Hide the Bermuda Onion to the back. Let it be an accent, but it currently overwhelms.
- Sharpness. Nicely done.
- What is my reaction or feelings? My first reaction is "Eh, it's okay," but here's the thing: This is your best image out of nine submissions.

If you haven't already read it, I suggest //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=156130 You want you photography to improve, take this line to heart: "Your challenge: Shoot an Endangered Species. Capture a photo of something for the benefit of later generations who may never see one." This is what will get you 'unstuck' from the middle range as you say.

I hope this helps.

Comment by Prism:
Nice arrangement in the bowl. I think more background around the bowl would have enhanced the visual impact of the bulbs. Perhaps another third width of table showing on one side or the other? A plain white bowl rather than the two tone white and yellow would have emphasized more what was in the bowl rather than bringing the eyes to the bowl itself.
