The focus problems are there, but not that big a deal in my mind. I think the DOF is nice, though perhaps if the entire leaf were not in focus it would look better if both ends were out of focus? Kinda nitpicky, though, and certainly not enough to explain your score...

I think it would have been better to gently spray the leaf so the drops remained nice and round; maybe even dab them on individually. That would have made (to my mind) a huge difference.

Overall, I think this is a much nicer shot than its score gives it credit for. Nice job.

Thanks Everyone, to address the DNMC thoughts... I know it was maybe stretching things a bit, but I was using the angle that a dead player, has 'gone home' in a different way.

I didn't show it particularly well, but he was supposed to hve been clobbered across the back of the head with his opponents bat.
