This image has a lot of things going on.
Its hard not to think that color is the major element, but the limited contrast between subject and background neutralizes the effect. there also is the pattern on the lure to consider, but the shape is still dominate.

I like this. I wish the boy didn't have on a distracting shirt. It'd be cool if maybe he were shirtless.

Conrad,

For a Shallow DOF challenge there seems to be a lot in focus, your entire subject. There is nothing to give depth to the photo like Skip suggested.

nice portrait shot. as a challenge entry, though, you could have done much better, especially with that lens. all it would have taken would have been another person behind them. this is not perfect, but it will give you an idea as to what i'm talking about:

Greetings from the Critique Club

This image is peaceful and quiet. I like the composition very much and the light on the pond is beautiful. Because it is backlit, it is difficult to make out the railway bridge and while I think I see that there is actually a train on it, as a title, it is just a little obscure.

I would suggest a couple of ways to retake this image. First, if you do try again, consider bracketing your shots. In this instance, definitely under-expose to see if that would give you a better image. I would also experiment with your ISO. It may be that an ISO of 100 would do the job well here.

The final suggestion I would make would be to try to use the full amount of pixels DPC allows. This image comes across as a bit small but in DPC you have 640 pixels on the longest side as well as the 150mb file size. You might try to take full advantage of those pixels.

Congratulations for getting up so early to take this pretty shot. I wish you luck in future Challenges.
