Your comments (as well as ladymonarda's) are very helpful and greatly appreciated.

It looks like I need to learn lighting. I have been commented on before in that my photos were flat. But didn't know what to do about it.

I was considering the tattoo, anklets and slippers as foot-wear. (decorations) but now I see your point that because nothing popped out it may not be seen as footwear. (or really DNMC)

You have been very very helpful. For that I am thankful. I guess I'll try another challenge rather than just go back to impressing my family! :-P

A couple of things I can point out for you if you're interested. ;^)

First, what is the subject of your image - footwear or tattoo? The challenge theme is footwear, but your title points to the other. If I were to look at this image without knowing what the challenge is and without your title, I would say the subject is the tatoo. This may have garnered some low votes from the DNMC crowd. Yes, technically you have footwear in there...

Second, the image is a bit flat. The lighting is ok, but nothing jumps out or "pops" here. Some additional contrast would help alot, some experimenting with more dramatic lighting could be considered, maybe even a different background?

Last, the image is soft. Nothing really begs for attention that is sharply in focus.

What it all boils down to is (in this case) you needed to define the subject more clearly and make it more interesting/artistic rather than a documentary/snapshot type image.

Saw your comment under footwear. Well, I did not vote on this one due to lack of time, but really consider this a learning experience. It was definitely too soft a focus for the folks here. Though your details are still there, I think you also may have suffered from that horrible malady of which I have been suffering from, subject interest. Most folks probably thought it was too snapshotish and uninteresting, so they would have scored lower. The photo can be absolutely wonderfully detailed and sharp (see my entry Out Of My Gourd) but if they find it uninteresting, your score will reflect that. Your photo may have done better if you took the slippers off, and painted your toenails, then shot from a different angle where the toenails were quite clear and the butterfly and bracelet also. Your color is quite good on this one considering you used ISO 400 and there is not an ounce of discernable grain, two things to keep in mind when you are shooting for future challenges. Might allow you to take some lower light setups, which I can't do because I get a lot of grain and bad color.
