not really seeing the 'grain' here. The image seems to have been softened out intensely to the point that all grain is gone

Nice blue sky here, I like the pattern to the balloons. I don't know how close to the ground they were or if you could have helped it but it would have been better for me if the shadow on the bottom of the balloons wasn't so strong.

As soft and grainy as this is, I have to assume the limitation here was not your skills, but the capability of the equipment you had. Lots of noise suggest this was either an extreme crop or done with a compact camera. Although we like to say "it's the photographer, not the camera", the fact is that equipment does play a part.

So the planes flying at this incredible speed are surrounded by some kind of halo or is it the sign of a bit of selective tweaking on the editing stage? This looks cooked and at the very least it'd be great to see your comment on the shooting/editing details.
