I like this one better than your first. Lighting is much better. I understand the heat. I am here in AZ and my husband is helping me do this in 100 + temps. Great job on this one.

very nice start, melissa. what next?

remember, the only thing you really have control is your camera, and once you have mastered controlling your camera, you can work on the art of 'story-telling' the action. here, you have nailed the capture. what can you do to put more story into it? try it with a much, much shorter dof, so that the background blurs. depending on lighting conditions, try bumping up your iso to 400, and dropping your av to 2.8. also, try shooting burst in sport mode.

the next thing you can try to control is your perspective (sometimes, you just have to make due with the angle or position you are in). when you can, take a test shot and check out how the background comes through. you might find that a different angle, or moving to the right or left, will give you better background colors that will complement your image. the other aspect to perspective is whether or not it will make your image dynamic, as if your subject is bursting off the image. this might mean getting down on the ground, or standing on a ladder. sometimes, you will want the straight-on eye-to-eye view (like in your other shot ). other times, you will need an angle. consider shooting this while lying on the ground next to the wall and having your subject take a running jump off the wall over you...

try reshooting this with these things in mind and see what happens...

again, great start!

Maybe even out the colour balance a bit. Get rid of the over use of red?

Composition and perspective on these 'tools' could be more interesting. There is also a red color cast which should be corrected, IMO.

I like this photo although even with it being lower level dressage it doesnt portray this discipline to me. Palominos are always best shot with good lighting because they have a beautiful golden glow when the light is right. Because the side nearest the camera is in shadow it makes the image look a bit flat and this would also affect the focus. I think the crop is fine but would have liked to see the horse a bit softer on the bit.
