Lighting is harsh and flat (try bouncing the light, or using off-camera flash), and it's quite an unflattering pose.

sorry, but this is just a bit too snapshotty. however, if you really want to take your photography to a higher level, you've come to the right place. check out the archives for the pet portrait challenges, and you can find a wealth of great examples for photographing animals.

Nice dog, but nothing really stands out in this image other than the purple collar. The background is too bland for the color of the dog, the angle isn't interesting & there is an overall lack of contrast.

Sorry, this just looked like a snapshot to me. Try getting lower, and shooting your subject from "dog level" -- lay down on the carpet and put your camera at the same level as the dog's head; you'll be amazed at the difference.
