Comment by Sonifo:
I often want to stop as I am driving long hours to take pictures of the shiny snow where I love. I love the different textures it has when the sun hits it just right.

Very nice! The glare and the tone really do add to the illusion that this is an ocean shot.

Rather like the oddness of the water, and the smoke above it. And you have flying water birds too. Not sure about the line of shrubbery. I think you should play a little more with this scene/these textures.

Comment by Ken:
The B&W is great on this; really nice job on getting it to look like this. I don't know if it's from the overall processing or output sharpening, but I see a bit of haloing around the edges of trees. Or maybe it's just jpg issues, not sure.

My reference to my conversion steps is really only a rough outline. Although I like to convert to b&w in Lightroom sometimes, once the picture is transfered to photoshop I have difficulty adjusting tonality and am left with little more than contrast to work with - for this picture I delayed conversion for more control of saturation tonality in layers especially in relation to gradient map. There are really many subtle, intuitive ways to work with b&w. I wanted to mention primary steps, as I found them effective for this picture.

Like everyone else, I mistook this for a wide angle shot of the ocean. Very interesting. One question for you: Why did you move out of Lightroom into Photoshop to do your black and white conversion? I think they are identical, aren't they?
