I like the photo, but possibly capture the photo with the back portion of the stands further up in the left hand corner.

Very ethereal. The subdued colors are spooky. I wish the moon were more focused.

Hello from the Critique Club!

The eyes are the windows to the soul, so already there is an implied frame! This soul, being your daughter, means the world to you and so the image has special meaning for you. The eye is physically framed by the eyelashes and the natural folds of the eyelid, so meets the challenge well.

Most cultures in the west read left to right and naturally ‘read’ images in the same way - the dark space on the right of the image is the first thing the eye naturally sees and keeps pulling the viewer’s eye away from your main focus. This space is not needed in this image it adds nothing and is distracting. A much tighter, square crop would eliminate that and create a much more dramatic and dynamic image.

I love the sparkle and glitter on the skin, giving the impression of light playing on the skin. In comparison however the pupil seems ‘dull’ and without light. There is nothing there - no reflections, no points of light making it feel somehow unnatural or as if there is something missing perhaps. (I’m wondering if you softened the pupil in post processing as it seems much softer than the rest of the image?) This in turn gives the impression that the subject is bored, tired or at least expressionless. This almost makes the viewer feel the same way, as we tend to mirror for a moment the emotions images evoke.

This image met the challenge well and the more you view it the more it grows on you, it just needs a little something extra to give it more impact.

This composition has a very powerful, artistic feel to it. While it won't appeal to all, the DPC's best genuine artists like JPR & Goodman & Xion (and others) will probably rate it very highly. I have more modest artistic credentials, but I agree with what I hope they will say about it! 9

Comment by Artifacts:
What better theme for a darkness challenge than an image of despair and hopelessness? Well done B&W. Including the bright window is perfect contrast to your subject's despair. That gives the feeling she has given up on life.

This may have been intentional but the focal plan is in front of your model and on her legs rather than her face. Focusing on the face would be worth consideration. There are two tiny items, one on the far laft side of the screen and the other on the far right. Since the viewer cannot tell what they are they act as a distraction and probably should be removed from the composition through a framing change or cloning.
