code orangeby tomzinhoComment by tomzinho: cristo -
thanks for your critique of my 'code orange' photo. i thought the photo was fun but just okay and it came out a little better than i expected in the voting (and i agree - getting the right perspective was the challenge, which i don't know if i did as effectively as i could have).
i have to say that i strongly disagree w/the meet the challenge comment. 30% of the top 20 entries were stationary (more or less) objects and i don't believe in general that issue hurt me too much (ie: i didn't get hurt because i took a photo of parked cars, i got hurt because i took a unique but not terribly interesting photo of parked cars).
in general i think that 'fit the challenge' attitude is the biggest problem with this site and i've chosen to totally ignore such comments (see my fauna entry) and hopefully little by little more people will see the light and open up their minds to good photography that is creative and interpretive as well.

code orangeby tomzinhoComment by christo: This is a very original entry. I like it when people go out in the streets to find interesting scenes to capture that fit the theme. You've been well rewarded with this finding.
You also pretty well captured this yellow line. The composition is pretty good. I like your tight cropping, I think it adds a lot to the picture. But maybe a less conventional composition would have worked better. For example more right behind the cars. I don't know, this was something to experiment.
The exposure is very good. The wide DOF fits your image well. I'm even surprized you get this depth of field with an aperture of f/3.5...
My main criticism is about how well this subject fits the theme. In my opinion the best pictures this week were those which conveyed the idea of transportation and motion. I think this is what this image needs: a sense of motion. Parked cars don't convey too much this idea, and I think it was important to describe the "transportation" theme.
So, to summarize: perfectly executed photography, but another subject would maybe have had a better impact.
Good luck for your future entries!

primary flowersby tomzinhoComment by KarenB: This is so beautiful! I feel like I am hiding from the world, but in a fun way.
A little less dof may have eliminated the tree in the background, or shifting to the side to obstruct the view of it... Love the play of light and shadows, and the soft focus. Be proud of this one, and make a large print! |
