The cloud formations are very interesting and captured well but I'm not sure that the coulds alone are enough. My eye wants to see what is happening below as well

I don't know what you mean by saying it's hard to get shots unless you're on continuous advance. Anyway, some good advice is to actually use a low ISO - 100 is fine! In Aperture Priority mode, set the aperture to f8. With the camera on a tripod, you should be able to get good shots when you learn to anticipate when the fireworks burst.
Also, try not to be downwind from them, otherwise you'll get a lot of smoke as well. ;-Þ
