I get the overall idea. but I guess there is just to much hmmm... clutter, is that a word? in this picture to just pull a viewer in.
Lighting could be a bit brighter too.
Try to only show what you want to show, just the bills glasses and phone would have created more impact imho.

Technically this one suffers, looking more like a snapshot of a messy desk than a photograph of what I presume are bills due (ASAP). Narrowing in on just the checkbook, pen and underlying billing statements, especially if therer were a date pending, would really strengthen both composition and message (as relates to the title).
