The crew from the earth alliance had it's first victory when the alien vessels became tangled up in each other's tendrils. They got smarter afterwards, having learned that formation flying was a bad idea for shadow ships.


The only thing I can think this looks like is one of those decorative balls or ornaments made from strands of spun plastic layered in a ball shape.
