Photographing food is tricky. A viewer's reaction to the presentation of the food will override everything else. In this image, the food comes off quite un-appealing. (I think it's the combination of foods) You did set yourself a difficult photographic challenge, and pulled it off well. Getting the highlights of the cauliflower in front of the shadow on the plate is a nice touch.
