I can't help with the lighting other than to say it looks good (and professional) to me. Good job creating separation from the background with the light. And I think you had a pretty good model to work with. Cats are impossible. :-)

I hate SP's too; I much prefer being behind the camera! That said, your lighting here is very nice. A little less even (so maybe a little more dramatic) than a lot of studio lighting but I think it works with the textured sweater and facial hair and solemn pose. I might crop a little tighter on the left ... maybe not ;-) All in all, nice job, especially for 2 am!
