It's got potential. I'd say go for strong sidelighting - there's a lot of reflected glare in this one (from top right). The focus also falls off from the middle to the top right - so it looks like there's a bit of a tilt to the surface. Make sure your lens is perpendicular (in both planes) to the surface you're photographing - to get everything in focus. I'd also experiment with the texture of the surface - I'd start real smooth to just highlight the fingerprint texture. I'd also try a real greasy fingerprint dusted with some fine talc.

I paint abstract paintings, too....I love her style and colors! I'm amazed at the amount of pigment and paint she used! I bet this piece is gorgeous to look at. Tell her I LOVE the little bit of canvas I see here! :)
