the streak of line going across the frame is a little distracting IMO as it draws some unwanted attention. I don't see much grain in the image though.

I don't see grain on my monitor. I find the two-toned background distracting.

Where is the image grain? The background is beyond the DoF and should look that way - out of focus. But if there really was image grain the bird would have it too and I just don't see any. In fact it is pretty crisp and clear.

I was your one lone 10 vote, I fell in love with this portrait, I think its the look on his face that grabs my attention, a very natural smile, the angle of his pose is unique and the colors in his hat and eyes add to the capture. Maybe you have to be a parent to appreciate this shot (Im a father of three, but I think this is very well done.

Greetings from the Critique Club!!
Excellent shot! I love how you have captured the spirit of the boy, natural and candid, without it being what some call a "snapshot". I really enjoyed the composition, leads your eye and mind to what he is thinking. The lighting, detail and focus are all fine to me. The two circles in the background cause a slight distraction, but only slight. IMO this shot should have fared much better than the 5.3. Good work, and you have a beautiful subject to work with! Keep shooting!

hmm this shot suffers from slight camera movement. i dunno about you, but with a 50mm lens, i can't hand hold anything 1/40th or slower

I like the cap & the green shirt. I also like his smile and pose. The (furniture?) in the background is distracting to me.
