My coworker is a volunteer firefighter, so I see his action shots all the time. I suspect you are getting killed for ISO noise. Some NR could have helped, however this is also capturing a real life moment when it happened. The imperfections convey the fact that this is a slice of real life and not contrived in the least.

Very cool shot!

I think you might get more bang for your buck by cropping out the guy on the left. I'd go just next to his head and just above his shoulder. You'd still get that ladder on the other side of the fence, and most of the other firefighter.
