The color is good. The ice looks like jelly possibly due to the lighting. It is difficult to say what it is you are trying to capture.

After your PM, here is a critique.

People will look at this and say it's ugly, because, well it is an ugly plant. Nothing wrong with that, and you have done nothing wrong by shooting it. But with over 500 images just in this challenge to critique and comment on, that is the first thing people will say when they see it.

The same way that on baby shots people will say 'cute'.

As for the photo, it's technically OK, well exposed in most areas - is a little soft to be honest but that is only minimal.

Composition isn't great, just a plan near center. I think had you gotten closer to the messy parts (sap?) you may score better as this could hold some detail. Or you could have shot it from below to give it a little sens of drama.

the background is too undecided and the leaves are distracting in their pattern of light and shade ; more blur would have been more effective - this messy-looking flower on simple black would have been stunning

This is not quite working for me. It seems like your focus is fractionally off. Plus that flower is really pretty unnattractive - but not quite wacky enough to overcome that unattractiveness. Best of luck in 2005.
