Composition: The nutcracker and shells are a lovely subject, although I must admit that I am rather distracted by the "frozen" peices of shell in the air. I'm sure they are there because they just exploded from the shell, yet I cant help but feel like they detract from the image under the two peices.
Maybe a mixed background (a table top with the background suitably blurred) might have given this photo a bit more realistic life.

Lighting: The lighting in this subject is brillant, it gives the wood, nut and shell peices a wonderful colouring. I think another light source may have given a little more depth to the nutcracker, as the black background gives the appearance of being "cut out".

IMO a wonderful picture and a good show of "broken"

this shot didnt need to be isolated in black... it would have been a lot more interesting in an everyday kitchen scene or something similar.
