Tree Huggin Hippyby totaldisComment by dahkota: Honestly, while the texture of this tree bark is interesting, as an image it leaves me flat. This image shows wood but doesn't go far beyond that. To score well in challenges one needs to go beyond the first thought, such as 'tree,' to the fifth or sixth thought. Imagewise, the focus is a little soft for the subject and the composition doesn't add anything to the image. 3 |

otherwood.jpgby totaldisComment by MarkB: I would have scored this a 4 as well for many of the same reasons already given.
One thing that would help a shot like this is lighting. In this shot the light is very flat and therefore is not helping to bring out or accentuate the details. |

otherwood.jpgby totaldisComment by aboutimage: Posting comments as asked for in the "Wooden" thread.
If this were posted as a challenge entry, I would probably give it a 4. It's a fairly mundane subject, so something needs to happen to make it more interesting to the viewer. Keep in mind, it's just a knot of wood, so you need to approach it in a way that catches the viewer's attention.
From a technical perspective, your DOF is too shallow, causing the knot to be the only thing in focus. I think the shot would be more "dramatic" if everything were in sharp focus.
Some insight into how I vote (and probably not so different from a lot of others):
Starting out: 5
--Technical issues: -1 (for focus)
--Composition: 0 (It's not bad, but it's not eye-catching either)
--Subjective Interest: 0 (this subject simply is what it is, there's nothing terribly fascinating about it)
I hope this helps. Message edited by author 2005-07-25 11:12:40. |

otherwood.jpgby totaldisComment by pawdrix: At the risk of sounding harsh...it's a bit of a yawn. I'm not to wild about the dof either. I generally don't like to see big sections of blur right up front, as it does weird things to my eyes. Overall, not a terribly interesting subject. 4 Message edited by author 2005-07-25 11:22:30. |

good cop bad copby totaldisComment by oOWonderBreadOo: odd title (am I missing something?) but anywho! I think you should have cropped closer to the leaf or perhaps decreased the contrast in the gravel because you have lost texture there... |
