This is interesting; I really like the spotlighting and B&W. I think it's a bit tilted (not always a bad thing in my book, but here it's distracting) and some detail is lost on the spindle and thread.

Nice idea but light seems a little harsh on the top of the cotten reel

Well, not last at least. As an example of doing this kind of stuff it's pretty reasonable ... though not territory in which I have much expertise, so you aren't going to get a very thorough critique from me on that I fear.

Also, quite clearly, you suffered from the 'photographic integrity' thing that is rife around the site right now. Even though this is 'legal', there is certainly a reaction against the use of it - partly at least, out of fear that the 'real photography' component of the challenge is under threat. Maybe that will lessen as time goes on, but I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope.

It fits the challenge, though. and there is something oriental-seeming in that processing you've done.

Good idea, composition and lighting setup are great. Lighting on the spool is a bit intense. I'd have prefered a bit of a simpler title. Choice of background could have been better. Overall, good shot.

Nice idea overall (a good pairing, needle and thread!), good idea for directional light here, but it looks overexposed on the spool, and it might have been good to have all the thread highlighted (it crosses into the dark areas in the foreground and on the right.

Hi, Betty,

Congratulations on a well-done photograph. You've captured a scene very nicely, and you've shown the warmth excellently.

Photography is about telling a story, and, here, you've shown the story of one woman's live. Perhaps this led to a very detailed shot, but then maybe that was necessary. For me, there's a bit too much detail for this photo to be comfortable. Filling the frame with just the woman and the action would be just as effective, I feel.

I believe that you met the challenge well. I had a double-take with the title, though. In this internet age, I read 'Bush' as the USA president's name at first. The pun on tribal bush tribes came later. I'd have preferred just the last part 'tradition without technology', as that is sufficient to tell your story.

On a different topic, I really liked your 'Mountain Man'. All of the business of the Dutch woman is gone, yet the story is just as full.

If you have any comments on my critique, please feel free to contact me.

Best wishes,

Jim

You have done some good work in the past, it's a pitty about this shot. I really thought it was done by a real ammature, but obviously not!

I'm not really a fan of the inverted or oversaturated, funky edited pop art look, sorry.

Different and fits the challenge I think this would be nicer in the usual image as it looks like a nice dog Not too keen on this variation

I never have and probably never will appreciate the psychedelic over processed shots such as this one...
