The lighting needed to be balanced from the other side to give it more punch. Did you consider carrying a small piece of white foamcore with you. It will reflect the available light and allow you more leeway in your options, especially in the field, than a second, electric, lightsource.

Hmm... a little rotation of the image, a little levels and saturation (just a tad!), a little sharpening and despeckle, and POP! This is just what I would suggest.
