The main thing this has going for it in my opinion is the sense of scale but you've minimized that to some extent by going with a squarish composition. Perhaps that was just a compromise of having to deal with the limits DPC sets on dimensions but ideally I rather see this much wider or possibly taller to really get that sense of scale and pull me into the scene.

what a perfect shadow to have the man walking out on and he's illuminated, perfect, also like the contrast of the dunes on the background, the man in the image allows the viewer to know how big these dunes really are, he puts this image in perspective
