Comment by Gordon:
It is a sad story and your picture reflects it well. The black and white does add to the feel. Perhaps if you had taken the picture from a lower (more child-like) perspective you could have further accentuated the mood of the picture ? The background wall/ panels are slightly tilted which seems to be accidental and would be worth fixing by a slight rotation.

I find the balloon very centered in the frame - maybe moving it off center would have provided a more flowing composition - eye starting at the balloon, moving down and across the other memorial pieces. as it is I get stuck at the balloon and don't really look elsewhere. Hope this is useful for you.

Should have been in soft color. Would make the messages on the wal stand out, as well as the heart felt things left there. This doesn't impace in B&W. You've got to get their attention to get them to read the article. Otherwise technically good photo. PTL6

I think this would be more effective if shot from an angle. Shot dead-on like this makes it feel more like a snapshot and less like a "photograph." *shrug* Just a suggestion. muckpond

For sure the hardest picture of the whole challenge. Brings me back from the joy and fun of the challenge to the real world and its cruelty. Hard to vote, but still thumb up.

B/W is somewhat appropriate to the mood of your image, but I don't think it works with the subject. A tighter composition would also help. I'm interested to hear the rest of this tragic story.

I'm curious why you chose black and white on this image? I would think that there is some interesting color here... I think a lower camera perspective here could be nice also :) - Please help us enhance this site that we all enjoy by commenting on photos each week. The photographers really appreciate it :) - setzler

Good idea, but needs a human element to be front page news.

For those of you wondering if this was telephoto or close up heres the story. I was at the aquarium by the ocean, and there were a lot of sea gulls around. One landed on a picnic table. I tried taking some shots with stuff in the background. Then I moved around it until I got a plain wall behind( new it would make for a better shot). Took about 3 shots from approximately 18 inches away(going closer each time). Then he decided to fly off.
By the way I think it is ironic that my best shot at the aquarium was of a bird!
