A very good Idea and image but technically poor approach lets it down.
the cast shadows indicate that too much flash has been used making the image surreal.
Proper exposure should have been based on the highlight porion of the stairs,then the flash should be set 1 Stop LESS than this exposure for example the highlight exposure perhaps at F 16 @1/250th the flash is set for F8.
conversely you could have slowed the shutter right down to !/15th at whatever and used 2nd curtain sync. Give you an 8 for effort.

Your description suites the shot..don't understand why anyone would think two eyes would work better..that would make it an entirely different shot. I think you caught the moment..maybe more of a Moods challenge shot..effective nonetheless...and not too dark.
