I don't know what to think about this - too bizarrre. I don't know, and can't imagine, what kind of reaction you were expecting. The dired blood on the kid's face - the strange exhibitionist pose with the tooth, that's obviously been out for some time. There's a certain honest accuracy to the skin tones, and the flash hasn't completely overpowered everything, which is a refreshing change. On a fundamental level, I don't get it, don't get what this is doing in a photographic competition.

ay-yi-yi. great capture. not sure how i feel about its bokeh with regards to the background creating a feeling. for me, this image is all about the paw and the claw, and that is all that really gets my attention (well, that, and the two pieces of crud in the fur that you could have cloned out... ;-)).
