I think mental illness in the homeless is quite common. Even slight degrees of it can land a person here. Some people just don't like being told what to do by parents so they for some odd reason would rather rough it on the streets than live by rules (even reasonable ones). Drugs often factor into the equation, as does prostitution.

There is help out there for them, but they gotta want it.

What strikes me about this photo is the contrast of their situation, with how pretty they both are. I mean. . .cleaned up and not homeless, that girl especially could be beautiful!

What in the world happened to their lives that got them there. I agree: this is photojournalism at its finest!

Reminds me of old, old photos in albums. They sometimes crack after a bit or get torn with handling. Like old hand tools one finds in tag sales, the surfaces worn shiny by human labour is attracive IMO. The trace of human activity - such as a plastered wall - is a subliminal language. You use it well but have a few bits of grammar yet to learn.
